F-16s Are Even More Awesome from the Inside

Goose only wishes he had moves like these. This stunning dash cam footage from an F-16 attached to the 51st Wing captured some intense aerial action at the recent Red Flag-Alaska exercises?including mid-air refuelings, targeted bomb strikes, low-altitude flybys, and even a cameo appearance by a B-2 stealth bomber. Makes Vegas' F-22s look downright tame.

Sunday afternoons talking about Enlightened Society
Post a Comment May 3, 2013 ? 4:32 pm | Permalink |

It all comes down to arranging radishes, really. There have now been five gatherings in our center parlor, five unstructured Sunday afternoons, discussing Enlightened Society. As the open invitation says ?What is it? Is it possible? Who cares?? Each time we meet there are some of the same people, and some different people, sometimes five people, sometimes 10. The discussion evolves freely, from personal stories to workplace and social situations. Some of us are Shambhalians, some have received the lung ? the Enlightened Society Treatise ? some are going to, some not.

And the radishes? A local farmer, just getting into his hectic Spring season, told us about a helper who insisted on arranging radishes to his own ideas instead of following instructions. The helper?s been instructed maybe seven times on how the farmer wants these done. So now what? Like the song ?50 Ways to Leave Your Lover? there are probably 50 ways to deal with the radish situation. Each will have some result and some residual emotional fallout over time for both farmer and helper! Society in a microcosm.

Everyone who comes either already knows how to listen, or soon picks up that it?s an important part of the gathering. Like songbirds, we each have our own refrain, buried in the general discussion. When you listen you hear again and again from one person the underlying song of how to belong, from another, how to be patient. From another how to have wisdom, another how to be brave. It feels like we are working on a jigsaw puzzle, helping each other put in the pieces. The picture we?re making is of Enlightened Society. And it looks a lot like radishes.

With A Widespread Launch Looming, Mozilla Rolls Out Firefox OS Simulator 3.0

Simulator-overviewMozilla was keen to talk up the 3.0 version of its Firefox OS simulator back in March, but didn?t have much to share about when eager developers could start fiddling with it. Thankfully for HTML5 buffs, that six-week quiet period is over ? the team just announced on the official Mozilla Hacks blog that the newly updated simulator is now available to download.

Dustless chalk may cause allergy and asthma symptoms in students with milk allergy, study finds

May 2, 2013 ? Many of today's schools and school teachers opt for dustless chalk to keep hands and classrooms clean. But according to a study published in the May issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the scientific journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), this choice in chalk may cause allergy and asthma symptoms in students that have a milk allergy.

Casein, a milk protein, is often used in low-powder chalk. When milk allergic children inhale chalk particles containing casein, life-threatening asthma attacks and other respiratory issues can occur.

"Chalks that are labeled as being anti-dust or dustless still release small particles into the air," said Carlos H. Larramendi, MD, lead study author. "Our research has found when the particles are inhaled by children with milk allergy, coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath can occur. Inhalation can also cause nasal congestion, sneezing and a runny nose."

Milk allergy affects an estimated 300,000 children in the United States, according to the ACAAI. Although it has been believed the majority of children will outgrow milk allergy by age three, recent studies contradict this theory, showing school aged children are still affected. However, 80 percent of children with milk allergy will likely outgrow it by age 16.

"Chalk isn't the only item in a school setting that can be troublesome to milk allergic students," said James Sublett, MD, chair of the ACAAI Indoor Environment Committee. "Milk proteins can also be found in glue, paper, ink, and in other children's lunches."

Even in the wake of whiteboards, overhead projectors and tablets, chalk is a classroom staple that likely won't become extinct anytime soon. Parents with milk allergic children should ask to have their child seated in the back of the classroom where they are less likely to inhale chalk dust, advises Sublett.

"Teachers should be informed about foods and other triggers that might cause health problems for children," said Sublett. "A plan for dealing with allergy and asthma emergencies should also be shared with teachers, coaches and the school nurse. Children should also carry allergist prescribed epinephrine, inhalers or other life-saving medications."

If your child is sneezing and wheezing at school, you should see a board-certified allergist for proper testing, diagnosis and treatment.

Manziel talks football, friendships and fame

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Johnny Manziel has decided he's not going to allow the pitfalls of fame stop him from having a good time, forging friendships with rival quarterbacks or even going back to class ? in person.

As for the pressure inherent in living up to the Heisman Trophy standard he set for himself in only his first season as quarterback at Texas A&M, isn't concerned about that, either.

"I'm not thinking about it. I'm just going out and playing football and doing the things I've always done," Manziel said Thursday, when he visited New Orleans to accept the Manning Award, which recognizes the nation's top college quarterback. "The success that we had last year ? I wasn't worried about my own individual success. I was just worried about going out and playing football and trying to learn the system and get better."

Following a memorable, highlight-filled regular season in which he accounted for 4,600 total yards, Manziel became the first freshman ever to win the Heisman Trophy ? then racked up an additional 516 total yards in a 41-13 Cotton Bowl victory over Oklahoma.

And then the player sometimes called Johnny Football found out how public his private life could really be.

He was famously photographed partying in a Dallas nightclub with a sparkler in his mouth as if it were a cigar while flexing both biceps. Other photos showed him holding what looked like a bottle of Champagne, raising questions about whether Manziel, now 20, was partaking in under-age drinking. Another showed him triumphantly fanning out a wad of cash at a casino; he later noted on his Twitter page is legal for someone 18 or older to gamble at a casino.

Even his decision to take classes online last semester became controversial . Manziel has said his decision to limit himself exclusively to the virtual classroom was a reaction to the attention he was receiving on campus while simply walking to class, and he added Thursday that he expects to return to regular classes this summer and next fall.

"It was just one semester ? something that I needed and wanted to do," he said.

Manziel said he's adjusting better to life as a celebrity, and is trying not to let it change him much.

"I continue to slip up every now and then with people that you think you can trust and you really can't, so I'm continuing to learn things every day," he said.

"I'm still having a good time. I know that. I'm not letting any of that factor into my life and what I want to do," he continued. "There might be some cameras here and there and some things like that, but I'm going to continue to still go to some basketball games, continue to still do things I want to do, just be smart while I'm doing it."

That includes making friends with Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron, who during the season will be among the players standing between Texas A&M and a chance at a Southeastern Conference championship or more.

"Once football season comes around, that's when it becomes rivals," Manziel said. "Off the field, we're all 20, 21-year-old kids just enjoying going to school, playing football and like doing the same things. Me and him have talked on Twitter, exchanged numbers and still continue to talk every couple weeks. So I'm maybe building a little bit of a friendship there, maybe going on a trip together this summer some time or just trying to be friends and hang out and have fun."

This July, Manziel plans to serve as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, La., where he was a camper while in high school.

Manning said he looks forward to having Manziel back in a new role.

In introducing Manziel to a luncheon crowd gathered for the Manning Award trophy presentation at the Manning family's downtown restaurant, Archie Manning talked of how extraordinary he thought it was for Manziel to do what he did in his first season in the SEC, a conference renowned not only for its string of national champions, but also for defenses loaded with NFL prospects.

Manning highlighted Manziel's performance against Arkansas, in which the Aggie QB compiled 557 total yards.

"That day he broke a 43-year-old Southeastern Conference record set by an Ole Miss quarterback in 1969 vs. Alabama," Manning said, referring to his own 540-yard performance against the Crimson Tide. "Thanks a hell of a lot, Johnny."

Manning and Manziel both said they were aware of comparisons made of their free-wheeling, scrambling style of play.

Manning said Manziel's 2012 season was among the best he'd ever seen for a college quarterback and was flattered to hear people say Manziel reminded them of his days at Ole Miss. Manziel, meanwhile, said being compared to Archie Manning is "awesome," and an honor.

Manziel will be eligible to enter the NFL draft after his next season. He said he'll make that decision with family and his Texas A&M coaches when the time is right.

Manning, who is routinely asked for advice by top college players' fathers, given his own experience with Peyton and Eli, said his only advice would be that if a quarterback in the SEC is not a lock as a top-10 pick, he should consider how an extra year in the conference might help.

"Another year in the Southeastern Conference is very beneficial to a quarterback. The defensive people you're playing against the defensive things you're seeing, if you stay healthy it's pretty beneficial as far as making that transition into pro football."

TurleyHelmetTossAPAP

Former NFL offensive lineman Kyle Turley admits that he?s scared.

That?s why he takes medication he hopes staves off degenerative brain damage, and why he called a league-sponsored help line when he considered suicide.

Turley, in an in-depth story with Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, thinks both stem from a career in the NFL which included two diagnosed concussions but what he thinks are many more undiagnosed ones.

?I?ve got young kids,? Turley said. ?It?s scary as hell. It keeps me up at night. It?s something that weighs on me heavily.?

Turley, who is one of more than 4,000 former players involved in a concussion lawsuit against the NFL, said he suffers bouts of vertigo and light sensitivity. He said his grandfather suffered from ALS, but that there was no other family history that involved brain disease, or pointed to suicidal thoughts.

?No one in my family has ever gone crazy and killed themselves or thought about that,? Turley said. ?I have. It?s not a thought that is fleeting. It?s a thought that goes away when I?m on my medication, and the thought of doing a lot of crazy things as well and making unbelievable decisions.?

Turley has a 2-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son, and he said he wants to do anything he can to make the game safer if his son wants to follow in his footsteps.

?I?ve got as good of a chance as anybody of going down that road into Crazy Land or into Super Crazy Disease Land,? Turley said. ?I?ve got every opportunity to probably be in the same boat in the future, and I don?t know how far in the future. It?s very, very disturbing, very frustrating, very stressful to deal with, especially having kids.?

Those children were on his mind when he called the NFL Life Line, a 24-hour counseling hotline set up by the league after Junior Seau?s death last year.

?It was imperative that I did,? Turley said. ?I don?t know how to explain it. It?s just a moment where you?re lost. You?re completely gone. You don?t understand the things that you?re doing, you?re pissed at yourself because you?re doing the things that you?re doing, and you have little control, it seems, over it.

?Even in the moment, you?re saying, ?Why is this happening? What is going on?? But you?re still in it. It?s a weird thing. I don?t really know how to describe it. It?s frustrating to no end, and that frustration can lead you to some pretty low places. Only those who have gotten to the point where they picked up a phone can probably understand.?

He can?t help but think about Seau at such times, and the fact that the support system that stemmed from the former Chargers linebacker?s death might have saved his own life.
