Turkey and France in growing confrontation over French ?genocide bill?

Turkey and France traded barbs Thursday, with the Turkish ambassador recalled from Paris. Turkey also suspended all bilateral political, economic and military cooperation.

The French National Assembly today passed a controversial bill penalizing anyone who denies the Armenian genocide by Ottoman forces almost a century ago.??

The bill, which now has to be voted on by the Senate, provoked a furious Turkish reaction. ?Ankara is recalling its ambassador to France while freezing official contacts between the two countries.?

?We are recalling our ambassador in Paris to Ankara for consultations," said Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, Associated Press reports.?

Ankara lobbied hard for the French government to shelve the bill and warned? of potential retaliatory measures. Earlier this week, a delegation of Turkish MPs and businessmen visited Paris to request that the government of President Nicolas Sarkozy abandon the bill.

"As of now, we are canceling bilateral level political, economic and military activities," Mr. Erdogan said. "We are suspending all kinds of political consultations with France" and "bilateral military cooperation, joint maneuvers are canceled as of now," he added.

Erdogan said that he will annul any permissions given to French military vessels to dock at Turkish ports and would consider on a case-by-case basis requests for military overflights and landings. ?The Turkish prime minister said that?"This decision is cause for concern not only for France where there are efforts to make gains through enmity toward Turks and Turkey, and in general terms, through Islamophobia, but also for Europe and principles defended by Europe."

The French bill requires a prison term of up to one year and a fine of $58,000 (45,000 euros) to anyone who publicly denies the mass killings of the Armenians during World War I.? In 2001, France officially recognized the ?Armenian genocide? but a subsequent parliamentary effort to criminalize it was dropped by the Senate.

"It is important, in the current context, that we keep the paths of dialogue and cooperation open," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said in a statement.

French lawmakers were vexed over what they saw as Turkish interference into the country?s internal affairs.

Subpug RSS Reader Looks To Pull You Away From Google Reader

As far as web sites go, there?s only one site I look at more than Google Reader. You?re on it right now. There?s nothing technically ?wrong? with Google Reader, but when you look at it every five minutes, every day of your life, another RSS reader option is super exciting.

Enter Subpug. It?s a new RSS reader that just launched on Christmas and it?s pretty slick if I do say so myself. It?s aimed toward more of the light news reader, rather than someone like myself with thousands of subscriptions. Still, it gets the job done.

You can choose from certain pre-subscribed options like Gadgets, Music, Fashion, and even Geek Humor, or you can build your own/import your Google Reader OPML. The set up process takes all of three seconds and you?re ready to read, mainly because there?s no sign up or log in of any kind.

The first thing you?ll notice is that it?s a totally different look from Google Reader, with a grey background and a nice, clean layout. But there?s more: on the left-hand side of the page you?ll see comments from the story that?s highlighted. I find this to be a pretty smart addition to your average RSS reader. I mean, what?s a post without the comments?

Users can also choose to hide certain topics from specific feeds, and there are options to share on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ etc. Subpug also added some cool cross-device functionality.

One thing that really bugs me about Google Reader is that it doesn?t translate well to mobile, at least on iOS. Android users are lucky enough to have a pretty solid Google Reader app, but the same certainly isn?t true for the iPhone clan. Google Reader in mobile Safari is tolerable, but nothing special. For something better you have to pull your Google Reader subscriptions into a third party app.

Getting Subpug up and running on your phone and/or tablet is easy as pie. Simply enter your email address into the proper field on the settings page, and you?ll be sent a link. Click the link on your phone, bookmark it, and you?re ready to go. On mobile the experience can be a bit frustrating if you have thousands of subscriptions (it loads a bit slow, and froze on me once), but as I said Subpug is meant for the casual reader.

I also found that the desktop web app loads slower than Google Reader, so it then becomes a trade-off. If a fresh new look and the ability to read comments as you go is important, a few extra seconds during refresh may be a fair price to pay. If speed is the name of the game, you may want to wait until Subpug cleans itself up a bit.

Either way, we?re glad to see another strong option fall into the RSS reader category.

Odd notes, mad-dash trips mark Iowa closing sprint (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Iowa's GOP presidential contest remains deeply unsettled, if not downright strange, five days before the Jan. 3 caucus.

Rep. Ron Paul, drawing big crowds, got a surprise endorsement Wednesday night from Rep. Michele Bachmann's now-former state chairman.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, who has languished for months, suddenly seems to have momentum, just as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich may be losing his.

And Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who began the campaign by de-emphasizing Iowa, might be poised to finish on top, according to some new polls.

Romney now is making an unabashed push in Iowa. His rivals are scrambling to deny him huge momentum heading into the Jan. 10 primary in New Hampshire, his second home.

Paul, the 76-year-old libertarian-leaning Texan, drew about 500 people at the Iowa State fairgrounds in Ames late Wednesday. A group of Occupy activists tried to interrupt the rally, but that wasn't the main surprise.

State Sen. Kent Sorenson, who had campaigned a few hours earlier with Bachmann as a state chairman of her bid, announced he would support Paul instead.

Paul's anti-government appeal appears to tap into the desire of a frustrated electorate for profound change in an era of high unemployment and an economy that has only slowly recovered from the recession.

"In the last couple of weeks I fell into Ron Paul's camp," said Bob Colby of Newton, who spent 21 years in the military and is a former employee of a now-shuttered Maytag plant in town.

Paul, who is airing TV ads hitting Romney and Gingrich, planned a town hall meeting Thursday in Perry, Iowa, plus stops in Atlantic and Council Bluffs.

There were other odd campaign notes Wednesday.

Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement disclosed an effort to persuade either Santorum or Bachmann to quit the race and endorse the other. "Otherwise, like-minded people will be divided and water down their impact," said Rev. Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister and a leader among Iowa's social conservatives.

Neither candidate appeared interested.

Meanwhile, an ever more confident Romney scheduled stops Thursday in Cedar Falls, Mason City and Ames. He has air support: TV ads say he has the best chance to beat President Barack Obama in November.

Asked Wednesday about the prospects for back-to-back victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Romney demurred. "I can't possibly allow myself to think in such optimistic terms," he said. "I just have to put my head down and battle as best I can."

Santorum seems to be gaining steam, according to a Time-CNN survey and some private polls. "We're very, very happy with the new numbers," he told reporters in Dubuque.

Acknowledging widespread voter anger in an age of high unemployment, Santorum told an audience Wednesday: "If you want to stick it to the man, don't vote for Ron Paul. That's not sticking it to anybody but the Republican Party."

Santorum, who planned events Thursday in the eastern Iowa towns of Coralville, Wilton, Muscatine and Davenport, says he believes his improved showing reflects voters belief that he "can be trusted" and that "we've got a record to back it up."

He said in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show Thursday that he's the only one in the Republican field who "has a track record" of winning elections in states, like Pennsylvania, where it was necessary for GOP candidates to attract independents and Democrats.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry adjusted his position on abortion for a second straight day, telling reporters he would allow abortion if a woman's life were at risk. On Tuesday, he had told a pastor that he had undergone a "transformation" on abortion rights and now opposed the procedure in cases of rape or incest after having recently met a woman who said she was conceived by a rape.

Asked if a mother's life was the only instance when he would allow abortion, he was concise as he boarded his bus Wednesday: "That's correct."

Perry planned Thursday events in Washington, Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown.

Gingrich, who has suffered a barrage of TV attack ads lately, also took aim at Paul. "I'm very uncomfortable with the idea that the commander in chief would think it was irrelevant to have an Iranian nuclear weapon," he said Wednesday.

Gingrich planned events Thursday in Sioux City, Storm Lake, Denison and Carroll.

Bachmann took aim Wednesday at her two rivals from Texas. She said Perry has spent "27 years as a political insider," and Paul would be "dangerous as president" because of his hands-off views on national security.

Bachmann scheduled events Thursday in Des Moines, Marshalltown and Nevada, Iowa.

3 NATO troops killed by bomb in east Afghanistan

Three NATO service members have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, the alliance said Wednesday.

A statement said the deaths occurred Tuesday, but provided no further details about the incident or the nationalities of the troops.

The latest deaths bring December's toll of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan to 23, for a total of 539 deaths so far this year.

The yearly tally is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. The number of wounded remained high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

Drew Brees' new NFL passing record: A 'classless' move? (The Week)

New York ? The New Orleans Saints quarterback broke Dan Marino's record for the most passing yards in a season ? but not without stirring up controversy

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees broke the NFL single-season record for passing yards last night in a 45-16 blowout over the Atlanta Falcons, surpassing hall of famer Dan Marino's previous benchmark with 5,084 passing yards. In front of a home crowd and a national "Monday Night Football" audience,?the Saints were up 38-16 with less than three minutes to play when coach Sean Payton decided to let Brees go for the passing record, instead of running out the clock ? a decision that clearly bothered a few Falcons players. "No need for that," one Atlanta player tells CBS Sports???and many critics agree.?Is Brees' place in the history books marred by questionable sportsmanship?

The Saints made a bad call: "Classy? Not so much," says Jason Cole at Yahoo. Coach Payton made a decision that "those who value sportsmanship will undoubtedly hate." Drew Brees is unquestionably "one of the classiest guys in the NFL," but after the game he said he hopes opposing coach Mike Smith knows he wasn't trying "to run up the score or anything." But, as Cole points out (reasonably enough), "you can't say that you're not trying to run up the score when you actually are running up the score." The Falcons have every right to be angry.
"Were Saints right to run up score for Brees? record?"

The Falcons are just raining on the Saints' parade: The Falcons "were pissed that they had to be the ones to give up the record on national TV," says Alejandro De Los Rios at the Gambit Weekly, and if they really had a problem with the record, "they could have, you know, stopped Brees." Calling the Saints "classless" is just "asinine," especially since the quarterback's road to the top has been so improbable: Many doubted that Brees could continue to play quarterback in the NFL after battling a severe shoulder injury back in 2006. If New Orleans ever needed a reason to party, "this is as good as any." They don't need permission from the Falcons.
"On the subject of Drew Brees' unquestioned greatness"

But it should have been truly special: "The kid got his wish," says Pete Prisco at CBS Sports. It's only too bad that "what should have been a truly special moment" didn't happen in the "context of the game." While the suspect circumstances don't completely overshadow the achievement of "one of the greatest passers of this generation," it does "take some of the gloss off of it."?
"Brees' record-breaking night tainted by decision to go for it late"?

Shanahan: Washington Redskins Revamp Taking Longer Than Expected

? December 26, 2011 - 3:36 pm

Mike Shanahan said building the Redskins to his liking has taken a lot longer than he anticipated.

The admission, one of his more telling of the season, came during Monday?s press conference ? less than 48 hours removed from the loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Shanahan said the Redskins had less depth than he thought when he took over as head coach in 2010.

The coach also said he could see a big difference between the Redskins now and when he took over.

Also of note from the presser, there is a chance Jarvis Jenkins will be able to participate in OTAs in March.

The defensive lineman suffered a season-ending knee injury in a preseason contest against the Baltimore Ravens in August.

Shell Oil Messes Off Two Coasts

Shell Oil Messes Off Two Coasts

Shell's 100-mile-long oil slick off the Nigerian coast, 21 December 2011. Envisat ASAR image analyzed by SkyTruth from data courtesy of the European Space Agency.Shell has admitted to spilling up to 40,000 barrels (1.4 million gallons) of crude oil into the ocean about 75 miles (120 km) off Nigeria on Wednesday. The spill occurred while it was transferring oil from a floating oil platform to a tanker.

Satellite pictures captured by independent monitors Skytruth (more here) show a 356-square-mile (923-square-km) slick approaching the oil-battered coast of the Niger Delta. All production from the Bonga field?normally about 200,000 barrels (7.2 million gallons) a day?has been suspended in the wake of the spill.

The Guardian reports on skepticism of Shell's estimates, based on its poor record in the region:

[A] leading Nigerian human rights group said Shell's figures about the quantity of oil spilled or the clean-up could not be relied on. "Shell says 40,000 barrels were spilled and production was shut but we do not trust them because past incidents show that the company consistently under-reports the amounts and impacts of its carelessness," said Nnimmo Bassey, head of Environmental Rights Action, based in Lagos. The spill, one of the worst off the coast of Nigeria in 10 years, is particularly embarrassing for Shell, coming only four months after a major UN study said it could take Shell and other oil companies 30 years and $1bn to clean spills in Ogoniland, one small part of the oil-rich delta. The company also admitted responsibility in August for two major spills in the Bodo region of the delta that took place in 2008, but has yet to pay compensation.

Shell also admitted to a spill in the Gulf of Mexico Sunday of some 13,400 barrels of drilling mud mixed with synthetic oil from the Deepwater Nautilus?a sister rig to the Deepwater Horizon.

The spill occurred at the Appomattox discovery, just 26 miles southeast of last year's disastrous spill. Shell plans five new exploratory wells at Appomattox, hoping to recover more than 250 million barrels of oil... though the Houston Chronicle reports it could be weeks before the company can resume drilling in the hotly-disputed site:

The Appomattox project is at the heart of a high-stakes dispute between environmentalists and the federal government over offshore drilling... In separate cases that have since been consolidated, conservationists are arguing that the government acted prematurely in green-lighting the plan without first finishing an environmental study of the Gulf... The cases present a major test of the federal government's power to swiftly review and approve deep-water exploration?plans.
