1) Automating Tweets

I am very opposed to using services like City Blast which offer a syndication feed of property listings and real estate news. Everybody syndicates the same stuff and it often includes a link that takes the Follower off Twitter to another site. Ever think that maybe they don?t want to leave Twitter?

This is not a conversation it?s a broadcast which sounds like a broken record and people see through it. While having current news and listings is valuable, it has it?s time and place?. on a dedicated listings page really. Too many realtors think of social media as another advertising portal instead of a 2nd phone number to stay in touch with clients.

If you?re going to use a service like City Blast it should not represent more than 10% of your tweets or it will not look like it is coming from you. As a realtor I?m sure you can appreciate the power of ?word of mouth? and that?s really what social media is? the key difference is that everybody is watching. One needs to be careful of what they put out there because it may look like you don?t really care.

2) Not Searching Other Tweets

Now this is one of the rare exceptions where I encourage automation. I use a program called TweetDeck?(made by Twitter)?and there are many more like Hootsuite. It allows me to set automated search operations (search columns). I?ll create a search column for any Tweet that includes the words ?Bought First House? and ?Sold Our House?? you can come up with many more like ?Finally moved in? or ?My new condo?. If you load these all up you?ll start seeing a trend, you see emotions? you see real people celebrating or cursing the triumphs and woes of real estate.

If you look at my screenshot up top (TweetDeck Screenshot) ?you?ll see a number of tweets are worth re-tweeting ?RT? and when done with consistency can start inspiring people who follow you to make a move themselves. You should also follow all your clients and partners? comment on some of their tweets, ask them questions and RT their tweets. Imagine the vibe you could create on your profile if it was covered with RT from real people saying these things?

Make it your goal to involve someone who has their own Twitter account in all of your Tweets. Bet you can?t automate that now can you? Don?t fret, you can schedule your Tweets with TweetDeck so that you can do 5 or 6 of them quickly without actually blasting everyone with all of them in one shot. Remember to space them out if you?re going for inspirational quotes (RT phrases like the ones in my screenshot).

3) Not Taking Ownership

When I say ownership I mean pride, I mean confidence and comfort. Don?t be afraid to be yourself? show your Followers you are human, admit it you?ve had a long day? ask your followers to bring you up to speed on everything you?ve missed. Wondering if it?s raining across town? Tweet it? you?d be surprised at how fast you can get an answer.

Get a Twitter App on your mobile phone and enable email notifications within your Twitter Account settings so that you know when to login and respond to someone asap. Remember, 80% of social media is done on mobile phones sharing pictures and straight old fashioned talking. Ok old fashioned is dead, we now type with our telephones but you know what I mean.

Make Twitter your 2nd phone number, show interest in what others are talking about, voice your opinion and jump into the conversation? it?s one big party and everybody is welcome to it? that?s the beauty of social media. It?s now fast becoming the #1 way consumers complain about products and services.

You can take that as a blessing or a threat. If you ignore it? it?s most definitely a threat? but if you respond to it, you can turn it around in public view and that?s what people will never forget and keep talking about. Be a journalist, be a friend, be honest and above all be consistent. Happy Tweeting!

Maya text cites 2012 as end of calendar cycle

A newly discovered Mayan text reveals the "end date" for the Maya calendar. But unlike some modern people, ancient Maya did not expect the world to end on that date, researchers said.

"This text talks about ancient political history rather than prophecy," Marcello Canuto, the director of Tulane University Middle America Research Institute, said in a statement. "This new evidence suggests that the 13 bak'tun date was an important calendrical event that would have been celebrated by the ancient Maya; however, they make no apocalyptic prophecies whatsoever regarding the date."

The Maya Long Count calendar is divided into bak'tuns, or 144,000-day cycles that begin at the Maya creation date. The winter solstice of 2012 (Dec. 21) is the last day of the 13th bak'tun, marking what the Maya people would have seen as a full cycle of creation.

Some New Age believers and doomsday types have attributed great meaning to Dec. 21, 2012, with some predicting an apocalypse and others expecting some sort of profound global spiritual event.

Cosmic Log: Maya discovery marks time beyond 2012

The date was made famous by a reference to the 2012 date in an inscription on a monument dating back to around A.D. 669 in Tortuguero, Mexico. (Mexican archaeologists reported finding a second reference to the date last year, carved or molded into a brick at the Comacalco ruins nearby.) [End of the World? Top Doomsday Fears]

Now, researchers exploring the Maya ruins of La Corona in Guatemala have unearthed another reference. On a stairway block carved with hieroglyphs, archaeologists found a commemoration of a visit by Yuknoom Yich'aak K'ahk' of Calakmul, the most powerful Mayan ruler in his day. The king, also known as Jaguar Paw, suffered a terrible defeat in battle by the Kingdom of Tikal in 695.

Historians have long assumed that Jaguar Paw died or was captured in this battle. But the carvings proved them wrong. In fact, the king visited La Corona in the year 696, probably trying to shore up loyalty among his subjects in the wake of his defeat four years earlier. [See images of the carvings]

As part of this publicity tour, the king was calling himself the "13 k'atun lord," the carvings reveal. K'atuns are another unit of the Maya calendar, corresponding to 7,200 days or nearly 20 years. Jaguar Paw had presided over the ending of the 13th of these k'atuns in A.D. 692.

That's where the 2012 calendar end date comes in. In an effort to tie himself and his reign to the future, the king linked his reign with another 13th cycle ? the 13th bak'tun ending on Dec. 21, 2012.

David Stuart, a professor of art history at the University of Texas at Austin, recognized the reference to the date among 56 glyphs that were carved on the stone block. "It was a time of great political turmoil in the Maya region, and this king felt compelled to allude to a larger cycle of time that happens to end in 2012," Stuart said in a statement released by UT.

By referring to a date that seemed far in the future, Jaguar Paw was trying to place his reign and his accomplishments in a larger cosmological framework ? in effect, emphasizing a big-picture view to divert attention from his recent troubles.

"What this text shows us is that in times of crisis, the ancient Maya used their calendar to promote continuity and stability rather than predict apocalypse," Canuto said.

La Corona was the site of much looting and has only been explored by modern archaeologists for about 15 years. Canuto and his dig co-director, Tomas Barrientos of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, announced the discovery of the new calendar text Thursday at the National Palace in Guatemala.

The researchers first uncovered the carved stone steps in 2010 near a building heavily damaged by looters. The robbers had missed this set of 12 steps, however, providing a rare example of stones still in their original places. The researchers found another 10 stones from the staircase that had been moved but then discarded by looters. In total, these 22 stones boast 264 hieroglyphs tracing the political history of La Corona, making them the longest known ancient Maya text in Guatemala.

From Facebook's company-obsessed culture to its rowdy parties, a former employee is airing some of the social network's dirty laundry in a book released Tuesday.

Katherine Losse, a former employee who worked in customer service and eventually became the ghostwriter for company CEO Mark Zuckerberg, wrote "The Boy Kings: A Journey into the Heart of the Social Network."

Losse, who worked at Facebook from 2005 to 2010, says in her book that Facebook employeeswere expected to be dedicated to the "the cause," a Facebook-centric way of life.

Employees would compete with their social profiles by rewarding the most-liked photos and posts with money, Losse says in her new book, according to a press release. Employees were also encouraged to live within a mile of the office and rewarded for doing so.

Losse also says employees would use a secret app built on the Facebook platform called Judgebook to quickly display images of Facebook users for company employees to score.

The Facebook culture seems to put an emphasis on attractiveness according to Losse, who says in her book during VIP parties in Las Vegas, Facebook employees would have bouncers bring women to their table, then turn them away for not being attractive enough.

Privacy is another subject Losse touches on in her book, claiming employees had access to every profile in the early days of Facebook.

Facebook did not immediately respond for comment.

A drop for Russow, who weighed in at 246 pounds for UFC 147, may be a bit more difficult than for Nelson. In addition to being a pro fighter, he is a full-time officer in the Chicago Police Department. He doesn't train full time, like Nelson does.

Tropical Storm Debby threatens Louisiana, Florida

(CNN) -

Tropical Storm Debby crept up the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday, threatening to bring flooding and tornadoes to parts of the Gulf coast.

As of 7 a.m. (8 a.m. ET), Debby was about 165 miles southeast of the Mississippi River delta, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. The storm carried maximum sustained winds of 60 mph as it chugged north at 3 mph.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for coastal Louisiana from the mouth of the Pearl River westward to Morgan City, the weather agency said. New Orleans is not included in the warning area. A warning was in place from the Mississippi-Alabama border eastward to Florida's Ochlockonee River.

"The combination of a storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters," the hurricane center said. Floodwaters in parts of coastal Mississippi and Louisiana could reach 2 to 4 feet deep.

Debby is also expected to dump 3 to 6 inches of rain from southern Louisiana to the Florida panhandle, with up 10 inches in isolated areas, the weather agency said.

In addition, "isolated tornadoes are possible" over parts of west-central and southwestern Florida on Sunday.

Nine oil and gas production platforms have been evacuated, equivalent to 1.5% of the 596 manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, the federal government said Saturday. One of 70 rigs was evacuated.

Plaquemines Parish, on the southern tip, of Louisiana planned to declare a state of emergency Sunday, said emergency preparedness director Guy Laigast.

The parish expects a slow rise of water pushed by the winds. Crews will place sand bags along a back levee in Myrtle Grove, Laigast said. Louisiana Highway 23, a main road in the parish, could be affected.

St. Mary Parish planned Monday to place warning signs at two communities built at sea level, said Duval Arthur, director of emergency preparedness. "We're anticipating a 3- to 4-foot high tide. Water would be over the road in those areas."
