AnTuTu pegs Galaxy S III as most powerful Android device, potentially reveals its specs

AnTuTu pegs Galaxy S III as most powerful Android device, potentially reveals its specs

Ah, the Galaxy S III. We always knew it'd be a keystone among Android smartphones, but according to the AnTuTu benchmark suite, it'll be the one device to rule them all. While there's no way to verify whether this test is indeed legitimate, all Android users may currently peep the AnTuTu app, which not only shows the smartphone as having bested the mighty Transformer Prime tablet, but it also reveals the most comprehensive set of specs we've yet seen for the Galaxy S III -- again, take this with a grain of salt. The device is said to wield a Samsung Exynos 4212 SoC with a dual-core 1.4GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 4.7-inch, 720p HD display. This lines up similarly with the product listing from Amazon Germany, as the specs also reveal a 12 megapixel primary camera on the rear, along with a 2MP shooter on the front. No big surprises for the OS, which is listed as Android 4.0. Should the benchmark tests turn out to be legitimate, the HTC One X will no doubt have some very stiff competition.

Update: Samsung has revealed the 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad as the basis for its next superphone.

Netflix brought into the Sony Entertainment Network fold for British Bravia buffs

Image

Britons and citizens of the ROI! Sony's bringing Netflix to all Sony Entertainment Network-connected devices. It looks like Kaz Hirai's plan to "unify" the company and its media offerings is beginning to gain a little momentum. If you have a SEN-connected 2012 Bravia TV or Blu-ray player, then the app should be available soon -- although no-one seems to know precisely when. If you're on PS3, or in the States, then Netflix is old news, so don't bother with the press release after the break

NimbleTV streams cable content to 'any' device, launching 'in the next few months'

ImageWith services like Aereo TV taking a similar streaming approach -- and getting sued in the process -- NimbleTV won't have an easy road ahead, but the outfit's willing to take its chances. The startup plans to launch its subscription-based offering to the public within the next few months, allowing future users to stream cable content to unspecified devices at any time and from anywhere on the globe -- all thanks to Nimble's cloud-based software. However, unlike some of its competitors, NimbleTV will give customers the ability to select channel packages based on personal preferences, though that'll depend heavily on the TV providers going along for the ride. While the service will only be available in the US and India at first, the company does plan a broader launch at some point in the future. No word yet on how pricing will play out, but there is a NYC-only beta (just as Aereo did) which you can join now by giving the source below a quick click.

MarkaVIP Secures $10 million As The Middle East Takes Off

Screen Shot 2012-04-25 at 15.57.20Online private sales burst onto the scene a few years ago in the shape of Vente Privee in Europe and, later, Gilt in the US. It's a model we all know and love - and it's rapidly proving a model with which emerging economies are, well, rather obsessed. I was just recently in Istanbul where you can almost throw a stone and be sure of hit a private sales startup entrepreneur. And from there, and across the Middle East and North Africa (known as MENA), online businesses are growing like weeds. And some investors know it. Thus today MarkaVIP, a runaway private sales success story in the Middle East has completed a $10 million Series B funding led by European venture firm Prime Ventures. It's joined buy participation from New York City-based Invus Financial Advisors (IFA), Antwerp-based Hummingbird Ventures, and San Francisco-based Lumia Capital.

Cell Phone Study Suggests Female Relationships Shape Society ...

Posted by The Hand on April 22, 2012 in Relationships |

Cell Phone Study

?| April 20, 2012?|

An analysis of 1.95 billion cell phone calls and 489 million text messages reveal how men and women follow different relationship patterns during their lifetimes. The researchers argue that women?s friendships in particular drive the process of finding a mate and supporting the next generation.

The data could also undermine traditional notions about how humans like to organize themselves. ?There has been a view in anthropology that the ancestral state for humans is a form of patriarchy, and I?m not sure that that?s true,? says University of Oxford anthropologist Robin Dunbar, an author of the study published April 19 by Nature Scientific Reports. (Scientific American is a part of Nature Publishing Group.)

Dunbar and an interdisciplinary team examined cell phone data from a single provider in an undisclosed European country. (Specific locations were kept anonymous to protect cell phone users? identities.) The researchers worked with data gathered over a seven-month timeframe and restricted themselves to studying communications between cell phone users of a known age and sex, making a data set of about 3.2 million subscribers, or about 20 percent of the nation?s cell phone users. Working on the assumption that close friends communicate most frequently, the team analyzed the top three friendships of each cell phone user based on the frequency of communication to spot patterns in the average male or female user at various ages.

The researchers expected to find ?homophily,? or the tendency for an individual to pick a friend like him or herself. Instead, it seems that romance trumps other forms of friendship: The data revealed that an individual?s best friend, particularly in one?s 20s and 30s, happens to be someone of the opposite sex and a similar age. In addition, striking differences exist in how men and women communicate with their presumed romantic partner. For one, the man in a woman?s life was her very best friend for roughly 15 years, compared with seven years in the case for men. The peak age for partner parlance also differed: 27 years old for women and 32 for men.

After age 50, however, things change. The preference for a romantic partner peters out in both men and women, and toward the oldest age range in the data set, both sexes seek companionship first and foremost. For a woman, friendship with her man was replaced by a strong relationship with another woman, usually about a generation younger. Dunbar and his colleagues interpret this pattern as a mother?daughter relationship.

Putting together the strong preference in women for first a man and then a daughterlike figure, the researchers conclude that biology shapes female behavior, which in turn affects men. Dunbar suggests that women initiate and prioritize the relationship with a romantic partner earlier in life than men, an action that gradually leads men to reciprocate. This relationship remains top priority throughout the average woman?s childbearing years. After that, she turns her attention to supporting the next generation of women as they approach childbearing.

?Generally, we have probably underestimated how important these family support networks are,? Dunbar says. He speculates that contemporary declines in family size may reflect the mobility of modern women, isolating them from their supportive maternal network. In addition, he believes that the bonds between mother and daughter and the strength of a woman?s influence on mating are so strong that they may underlie human society?s natural tendencies. ?I think the default for humans, if all else is equal, is actually a matrilineal society.?

The data set also hints at a disparate and diffuse model in male friendship. The phone records support the narrative that women have intense, one-on-one friendships maintained and shaped through frequent communication. In fact, Dunbar believes that digital communication, with its texts, instant messages and other quick bursts, is generally tailored to a female?s friendship style. Men, the data suggest, have a very different approach: other than those romantic years with a woman as their best friend, men have multiple friendships with an equal ratio of men and women. This conclusion supports a popular model of male relationships in which men prefer to bond in groups doing shared activities.

The patterns of male and female friendship follow long-established observations in psychology and other fields, but the study?s broader biological interpretations strike some researchers as too speculative. ?This is very interesting data,? says University of Rochester psychologist Harry Reis. ?However, there are innumerable alternative explanations for the patterns they have come up with.? Reis studies human social interactions and has written extensively on intimacy and friendship in men and women. Among his concerns are situations in which non-romantic opposite-sex individuals communicate frequently, such as between co-workers or with an employer. Another case is the possibility that a woman?s relationship pattern shifts with age because later in life she may have lost her romantic partner through death or divorce.

Anthropologist Daniel Hruschka of Arizona State University in Tempe, who has a written book on the evolution of friendship across cultures, was struck by the similarities rather than the differences in the data on men and women. ?In their reproductive prime, both men and women call the opposite sex much more than they do later in life,? Hruschka says. Even presumed mother?daughter patterns are weaker than he expected. The data suggest that both men and women split their time between calling their children and their spouses. ?These differences seem quite small relative to reigning stereotypes about how frequently women communicate with children.?

Dunbar nonetheless suspects that the patterns they have identified are universal; he and his colleagues have a paper in press comparing male?female relationships differences across cultures. That is not to say he believes that these patterns apply to everyone. ?Our problem, in a way, is that we?re looking at averages,? Dunbar says. Individuals who do not conform to the assumptions of the study?for example, childless women?are assumed to be in the minority. ?Undoubtedly, they?re in there somewhere, but we probably wouldn?t be able to pick that up.?

FindLaw's Common Law: Dole Recalls Bagged Salad Over ...

Dole Food Company Inc. is recalling a specific line of bagged salad, called Seven Lettuces, because of possible Salmonella contamination. But for some consumers, the recall may have come too late.

No illnesses have been reported, but one sample of Dole's Seven Lettuces bagged salad tested positive for Salmonella, the Associated Press reports. In response, Dole issued the recall.

The recalled bags of Dole's Seven Lettuces were sold in 15 states: Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The recalled salad bags have specific UPC and product codes, which are listed on Dole's website. The bags are also stamped with a use-by date of April 11, 2012.

However, because the company's recall wasn't announced until April 14, there's a chance the potentially contaminated lettuce has already been consumed.

If so, it may be wise to try to hang on to the bag itself, as evidence for a potential food poisoning lawsuit. Such suits generally fall under strict product liability rules.

Those who have already consumed salad linked to Dole's recall may want to look for symptoms of Salmonella infection. They include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, about 12 to 72 hours after infection.

Healthy people can generally recover from a Salmonella infection within about a week. But in more severe cases, an infection can also lead to hospitalization and even death, if a patient is not properly treated.

Customers who purchased recalled bags of Dole's Seven Lettuces should toss the bags in the trash, Dole recommends. They can also call Dole's Customer Response Center at (800) 356-3111.

Customer Service for Business Phone Systems | Small Business ...

Customer Service for Business Phone Systems ImageWorking in a law office often means long hours and late nights, especially doing probate work. Getting in before seven A.M. and staying until well past business hours, I assumed that I would always be available for whoever might call me. Recently, my office switched our business phone system and I started to notice a drop in the number of calls I was receiving each day. It was such a change, in fact, that I was able to get my work finished much earlier than usual. I never considered that it could be our phone system and simply chalked it up to good luck. Little did I know that I was missing several calls from important clients who had almost all left voicemail messages that I hadn?t been receiving. A couple of weeks after he new phone system was installed, I ran into one of these clients while in court, who kidded me about being too busy to get back to her. It was then that I realized there must have been a problem.

The next day when I returned to the office, I asked my associates if they had experienced similar problems. They hadn?t, but they suggested I call the company who sold us our phones and equipment to see what could be done. I called, and within twenty minutes, the problem was fixed. Apparently, my voicemail was being sent to another place. The service representative explained in detail how to do a simple diagnostic to see if my messages were going where they were supposed to. When I found that they weren?t, he explained how to change the settings to solve the problem. While I now have a lot of calls to catch up on, I am grateful that the company we went with for our new phone system provides such competent customer service. I think that in the phone business, as in any business, it is paramount to success.

The Muslim who was spared a speeding ban arguing that he needed to drive between his two wives

?

When it comes to avoiding a ban for speeding, the courts hear every excuse in the book. But one motorist offered what must be a unique reason why he should keep his license. Mohammed Anwar said a ban would make it difficult to commute between his two wives and fulfil his matrimonial duties.

His lawyer told a Scottish court the Muslim restaurant owner has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow ? he is allowed up to four under his religion ? and sleeps with them on alternate nights. Anwar was caught driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone in Glasgow, fast enough to qualify for instant disqualification. Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his license. Instead, he was fined ?200 and given six penalty points. Anwar was on his way home from Falkirk to his Glasgow wife on August 21, 2007, when he was caught by city police using a hand-held speed camera.

Anwar?s successful plea joins a long list of unusual excuses heard in the courts down the years. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was cleared of illegally driving on a motorway hard shoulder because he said he was rushing to a toilet. David Beckham also escaped a ban after arguing he had to break the speed limit to escape a photographer.
