Holly oil refinery spill cleanup could take days

A crack in an Woods Cross refinery storage tank leaked an unspecified amount of thick oil overnight that could take days to clean up.

The spill was generally contained to the southeast area of the Holly Oil Refinery, though there were reports some of the spray landed on nearby cars and road surfaces. Refinery workers laid out oil absorption booms to keep the sticky substance from spreading into adjacent sewage systems or approaching a nearby trailer park.

Holly Frontier Corp. officials confirmed that the spill apparently occurred as the result of built up pressure in the storage tank, but the incident remained under investigation by refinery officials Friday.

No injuries were reported.

The refinery has a crude oil capacity of 31,000 barrels per day, according to owner Holly Frontier Corp.?s web site. The facility specializes in processing regional sweet and black wax crude oils as well as Canadian crude oils. Woods Cross refined products are marketed primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada,Wyoming, and eastern Washington.
